Two School of Computer Science students were selected for 2022 Microsoft Research Ph.D. Fellowships. Han Guo and Kangle Deng were among 36 students from around the world recognized as part of the program for their academic accomplishments and research initiatives.

Guo, a Ph.D. student in the Language Technologies Institute, studies natural language processing (NLP), machine learning (ML) and their intersections with systems. In particular, he's interested in efficient and distributed methods supporting various large-scale ML/NLP models and systems.

Deng, a Ph.D. student in the Robotics Institute, works on computer vision and graphics. Broadly, his research looks at the perception, understanding and generation of the 3D world, with a long-term research goal of developing ways for others to easily create their own 3D content.

The Microsoft Research Ph.D. Fellowship program is a global initiative that recognizes the next generation of computing researchers. It aims to increase the pipeline of talent receiving advanced degrees in the field and to build a more inclusive computing-related research community.

The two-year fellowship will cover the awardees' tuition and fees for two years. In addition, each recipient will receive a $42,000 annual stipend.
