About the Grant

CS+[X] aims to catalyze innovation through collaborative projects involving advanced computation technologies, with a focus on novel applications in disciplines outside of mainstream computer science. The X in "CS + [X]" refers to these disciplines, which include drama, art, music, design and architecture. CS+[X] encourages projects that are presented publicly, whether in performances, at the university's Meeting of the Minds undergraduate research symposium, gallery showings, exhibits or special venues/events.

CS+[X] grants are available to both CMU graduate and undergraduate students, including blended teams of both grad students and undergrads. Funding falls within the range of $3,000 to $5,000 per project (not individuals). A funded project must have meaningful and significant participation of at least one SCS student. Projects may help students fulfill academic degree requirements.

How to Apply

CS+[X] currently accepts proposals on a rolling basis through the academic calendar year. Proposals are reviewed and evaluated by an executive faculty committee. Proposers should submit their application via email to cs-x-fund@cs.cmu.edu.

Applications should consist of:

  • One PDF document with the main proposal
  • A second PDF document with proposed budget
  • Other documents accessible via URLs supporting the request. (Optional)
  • Application Form:  .docx, .pdf

We look forward to learning about your ideas!
